Pain Q & A
What are the different types of pain?
Pain can be caused by numerous different health conditions and you feel it in different ways, including burning, dull or achy, and sharp or shooting pain. Your pain may come from one specific area of your body like your back, abdomen, or legs, or you may experience all-over body pain, which is typical of health conditions like fibromyalgia.
The main types of pain include:
- Acute, or short-term pain
- Chronic, or long-term pain
- Bone pain from an underlying disease like cancer
- Joint pain from degenerative conditions like arthritis
- Nerve pain from a damaged nerve
- Fascial or soft tissue pain from damaged or inflamed muscles, tissues, and organs
- Referred pain when one part of your body affects another
- Phantom pain from a part of your body that’s been removed
- Total pain that includes emotional, social, and physical aspects
What causes chronic pain?
Unlike acute pain that comes on suddenly because of an injury, chronic pain doesn’t go away. It may subside for a short time, but it often returns, can last indefinitely, and causes serious inconveniences and disruptions to your quality of life. Chronic pain is often the result of an illness, underlying disease, or incurable health condition.
How can I treat chronic pain?
When you or your child experience chronic pain, the first step is to determine the underlying cause so that condition can be treated medically, if necessary. Since it’s not always possible to relieve every type of chronic pain, consulting a pain management expert and learning life strategies to deal with your pain can be very helpful. Dr. Anbar and the Center Point Medicine team teach you strategies to help calm yourself and understand what triggers your pain and other symptoms so you can manage them effectively.
Since pain affects every aspect of your life, it’s important to know how to deal with it, and the doctors recommend hypnosis and counseling as highly effective ways to control and manage chronic pain. Hypnosis is an all-natural approach to helping decrease stress and frustration that’s often associated with constant pain and physical discomfort. Hypnosis is safe for patients of all ages, and there are no harmful side effects, as there are with certain types of medication.
