Irritable Bowel Syndrome Q & A

What is IBS?

IBS is an intestinal disorder where inflammation, contractions, and other issues cause symptoms such as:

  • Pain and cramping
  • Bloating
  • Gas
  • Diarrhea
  • Constipation

IBS symptoms develop on a spectrum and vary from patient to patient. You may have mild or severe symptoms, and your experience may be different than that of other patients.

What causes IBS?

The exact cause of IBS isn’t known, but several factors contribute to the development of the condition. Some of the known contributing factors of IBS include:

  • Muscle contractions
  • Nervous system abnormalities
  • Inflammation
  • Infection
  • Abnormal microflora (bacteria) in the intestine

The muscular and nerve abnormalities can change the way food moves through your intestine leading to gas, bloating, constipation, and intense pain.

Often symptoms are triggered by the foods you eat and by your stress and hormone levels. For example, your symptoms might be triggered by dairy, citrus, or beans. Also, IBS is more common in women, with their symptoms spiking around their menstrual period because of hormonal fluctuations.

How is IBS treated?

The team at Center Point Medicine treats IBS using hypnosis and counseling in coordination with your primary care provider or gastroenterologist.   IBS often improves greatly with a combination of dietary and lifestyle changes, medication, and hypnosis. Changes in diet can include eating lots of high-fiber foods with plenty of water that will help improve your digestion and reduce your symptoms. Your provider may suggest avoiding foods like cabbage, broccoli, and other items that tend to create gas. Gentle exercise provides a variety of benefits, including improved sleep and digestion. This can also help reduce your symptoms.

Your provider may suggest medicine to control your symptoms like fiber supplements, laxatives, or anti-diarrheal medications. Some doctors may prescribe antidepressants because IBS is a chronic condition that can have a negative impact on your life and well-being. At Center Point Medicine, Dr. Anbar and the team focus on using hypnosis to help you manage the psychological effects of your disease and develop improved coping skills for your physical symptoms.

How does hypnosis help with IBS?

Hypnosis treatments help you reach a level of deep relaxation in which you can focus on soothing imagery and suggestions to help you remain calm and positive, even when your IBS symptoms are spiking. Hypnosis can provide pain relief for IBS and other gastrointestinal illnesses.

Hypnosis can help you keep resolutions to change your diet and lifestyle habits for better symptom control. You’ll learn that you have the resources within yourself to become calm and relaxed.
